Hexagram 44: Coupling
By: James Byrd
I. The Oracle
A. Hexagram Explanation
Hexagram forty-four is known as Gou, or Coupling. Other variations include “Coming to Meet” and “Meeting.” It is composed of two trigrams: the lower trigram is Xun, which represents wind or ground, and the upper trigram is Qian, symbolizing force or heaven.
B. The Judgment
- Coming to Meet: The imagery suggests a powerful maiden.
- Marital Caution: Advises against marrying such a maiden.
C. The Image
- Symbolism of Wind Under Heaven:
- a) Represents the concept of “Coming to Meet.”
- b) Teaches that a prince acts wisely when spreading his commands and ensuring they reach all corners of heaven.
II. My Interpretation
A. “Liaison“
The hexagram reminds us of the complexities and challenges of relationships. It evokes the notion of a strong, independent individual whose involvement might not be conducive to a balanced partnership. Love should be an equal partnership, guided by “The Divine.”
While we might feel stuck in certain situations, it’s important to push forward toward better times. As we advance, let us remain ethical and strive for positive outcomes. Communication is key, and often requires humility and understanding.
Additionally, there’s a caution against unwarranted physical contact. Chi, or energy, can transfer through touch, and unwanted interactions can be disrespectful. This applies universally, even in mundane settings like a checkout counter.
When it comes to interactions, especially with those different from us, consider actions carefully with the thought, “What would you not do?”

#44 Coupling
- Coupling
- Meeting – Coming to Meet:
- “A strong and willful woman, do not embrace her.”
Do not dwell on negatives when striving for improvement. Approach situations with the mindset of “Easy come, easy go.” Temptation often leads to trouble and requires careful navigation.
Enlightenment should not be forced or self-centered, as it can lead to entrapment. Consent and mutual agreement are paramount. At this time, marriage might be ill-advised, as noted by Blofield. “At this time marriage would be unfortunate”. – credit – Blofield.
The narrative emphasizes that strength, whether male or female, must be harnessed responsibly for just and positive purposes. Timing is crucial to achieving favorable outcomes. Be cautious in social interactions, and avoid unnecessary entanglements.
